A Structured Approach To Understanding And Reducing Bruxism

Jaw clenching and teeth grinding are often more complex than simply “stress.”

Many people find themselves consciously trying to stop clenching, only to discover that the behaviour continues automatically.

This is because bruxism frequently involves a combination of physical tension, nervous system activation, learned responses and unconscious protective patterns.

At Mindheal, treatment is approached through a structured three-stage process designed to address both conscious and unconscious contributors.

The Mindheal 3-Step Framework

Step 1 — Understand

Identify contributing factors including:

  1. Stress and anxiety patterns
  2. Sleep quality
  3. Emotional triggers
  4. Daily tension patterns
  5. Lifestyle influences
  6. Existing coping mechanisms

Goal:

Develop awareness and understanding of the factors maintaining the pattern.

Step 2 – Regulate

Introduce strategies to help reduce nervous system activation and physical tension.

This may include:

  • Relaxation training
  • Nervous system regulation
  • Emotional regulation skills
  • Hypnotic relaxation approaches
  • Stress management techniques

Goal:
Reduce physiological activation that contributes to clenching behaviour.

Step 3 – Rewire

Use therapeutic approaches including counselling, EMDR and clinical hypnotherapy to address underlying patterns and reinforce healthier responses.

Goal:
Support long-term behavioural and emotional change.
